2024 Election: Opportunity for Ghanaians to ‘Reclaim the Soul of the Nation’ -Akwasi Oppong-Fosu

Hon Akwasi Oppong-Fosu, a former Minister of State, has emphasized that the 2024 election presents Ghanaians with a unique opportunity to “reclaim the soul of the nation.”

Speaking on CTV’s programme “Master of the Game,” hosted by Kwasi Kyei Darkwa (KKD), Hon Oppong-Fosu expressed concern about the state of governance and the economy in Ghana.

He highlighted the country’s economic woes, citing “high inflation, the worst in 30 years, increasing government debt, the highest in 50 years, and the deep depression of the currency, also the worst in 30 years.” These economic challenges have led to the collapse of many businesses, making the investment climate unattractive and pushing millions of Ghanaians into unemployment and extreme poverty.

Regarding governance, Hon Oppong-Fosu referenced the Mo Ibrahim report, which revealed a dire situation, and noted that the judiciary lacks independence from executive control.

He assured that John Mahama would tackle corruption head-on, citing his record while in office as a testament to his commitment.

Hon Oppong-Fosu also emphasized the importance of addressing youth unemployment, which John Mahama recognizes as a threat to peace and stability.

To address this challenge, Mahama has proposed the 24-hour economy policy, which aims to boost productivity in key sectors like agriculture, industrialization, and technology, creating jobs and reducing unemployment. The policy will also introduce a 3-shift system, increasing labor demand and reducing unemployment.
