Votes for Akua Donkor to Be Declared Rejected Ballots – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that any votes cast for the late Akua Donkor, former presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), in the upcoming 2024 election will be classified as rejected ballots.

Madam Akua Donkor passed away on October 28 at Ridge Hospital in Accra after a brief illness. Her proposed replacement for the election was disqualified by the EC due to errors and irregularities in his nomination documents.

Although her image and the GFP logo will still appear on the presidential ballot, the EC has clarified that votes for her will not be valid.

In a statement released on Friday, November 22, the EC confirmed that such votes will not be included in the count of valid votes.

The Commission also noted that election staff and representatives of all presidential candidates have been informed of this decision.

“Given that the image and Party logo of the late Madam Akua Donkor remain on the 2024 Presidential Ballot Paper, the Commission has resolved that all votes cast in her name will be treated as Rejected Ballots.

“These votes will NOT be counted as part of the Valid Votes Cast. The General Public, as well as the Commission’s permanent and temporary staff and Agents of the Presidential Candidates, have been duly notified,” the statement concluded.
