Fact-checking is crucial in Election 2024 – GJA President

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Dwumfuor says fact-checking is a non-negotiable part of the 2024 general elections.

His comments follow the increase in disinformation and fake news shared on social media platforms by users and political party supporters in favour of their parties.

Speaking at a fact-checking training for journalists at the Spanish Embassy, Albert Dwumfour called on the media to be cautious of fake news and not fall prey to wrong information.

“Fact-checking is crucial and it is essential to verify information before sharing it, especially during elections. We must be cautious of sources with vested interests and biased agendas.

“As Journalists, we need to remember that reputable fact-checking organisations and independent media outlets are vital in separating fact from fiction. It is the only surest way of not falling prey to disinformation. Effective fact-checking is non-negotiable going into the December 7 elections.”

On the issue of safety for journalists during and after the elections, the GJA president, Albert Dwumfuor stressed the importance of safe journalism in elections.

“As the leader of the umbrella body for all journalists in the country, my concern now is the safety and well-being of journalists before, during, and after the elections. We have a constitutionally mandated duty to play a role in shaping the narrative of this election. Our audiences—readers, listeners, and viewers—must be well informed to make informed decisions at the polls,”

Additionally, the Spanish ambassador to Ghana expressed the commitment on the part of his country to support free and fair elections.

Albert Dwumfour also expressed gratitude to the Spanish Embassy, Casa Africa, Maldita.ES and Newtral for supporting the fact-checking training for journalists as he believes it will contribute to strengthening our democracy.

The two-day fact-checking training was organised by the GJA in partnership with the Spanish Embassy and Casa Africa for Ghanaian journalists.
