The Police and the Ghana Armed Forces have assured the public that they are working to bring the security situation in Bawku, its surrounding areas, and along the Bolgatanga – Walewale – Tamale highway, under control.
Aside the Police and Military deployment in Bawku and its environs, a statement issued by the Police said, there is also a joint Police and Military deployment along the Bolgatanga-Walewale- Tamale highway to ensure security and manage vehicular traffic.
“The security agencies would like to once again assure the public that we are committed to maintaining peace, security, law and order in Bawku and its environs,” the statement said.
Two people were killed, and several others injured in renewed violence in Bawku following a chieftaincy-related gun battle.
The longstanding chieftaincy conflict, which had recently appeared to calm, escalated after the return of a rival chief to the area.
Alhaji Seidu Abagre, who had been in exile since his installation in February 2023 in Nalerigu, returned to Bawku after a Kumasi High Court quashed his arrest warrant on October 17, 2024.
Tensions flared upon his return, reigniting the dispute and resulting in gunfire exchanges on the night of Saturday, October 26.
