Supreme Court stays execution of Bagbin’s ruling declaring four seats vacant

In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court of Ghana has issued a stay of execution on the ruling by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, which declared the seats of four Members of Parliament (MPs) vacant.

The affected MPs include Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Amoako Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central).

This decision by the court effectively halts the implementation of the Speaker’s ruling pending further legal review.

The Speaker’s ruling came after a motion was filed by former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, invoking constitutional provisions that require MPs who switch political affiliations or contest elections as independent candidates to vacate their seats.

Bagbin, acting on these provisions, declared the four seats vacant, sparking controversy and setting the stage for a legal battle.

The Supreme Court’s stay order is expected to delay any implementation of the ruling and maintain the current composition of Parliament until the final determination of the matter.
