Akufo-Addo has been most committed leader in galamsey fight – Enoch Afoakwa

A member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communications team, Enoch Afoakwa, has eulogised the efforts of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo towards the fight against illegal mining.

Mr. Afoakwa described President Akufo-Addo as the most committed leader Ghana has had in the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

He told Selorm Adonoo on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, October 12, that the many times that the military has been deployed to galamsey sites to clear miners is an indication of the president’s commitment toward winning the fight.

“I have maintained that this president [Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo] is committed to the fight against illegal mining and in the Fourth Republic, he is the president that has shown the highest form of political will in the fight against illegal mining. Look at the number of military interventions that he has sanctioned in his tenure of office in the last seven years.

“Which president in the Fourth Republic has ever sanctioned this number of military operations in the fight against galamsey. Mind you, the Ghanaian has a hidden expectation as far as mining is concerned. Ghanaians are exposed to the wealth of this sector and it is becoming more complex that we must confront together as a people.”

With many organisations and individuals calling for a ban on galamsey, the military was deployed as part of Organised Labour’s demands to parts of the Eastern region on Thursday, October 10, where 30 mining equipment were destroyed.

The task force moved to the Central Region on Friday, October 11, where it destroyed 10 Changfans, a pistol, and eight water-pumping machines on the Pra River
