Lands Ministry revokes FGR Bogoso-Prestea mining licenses after workers’ protest

In the early hours of Wednesday, September 18, 2024, the government, through the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, revoked the Bogoso-Prestea mining leases of Future Global Resources (FGR).

This decision follows months of agitation and protests by FGR employees over the company’s deteriorating financial situation, even after Blue Gold Holdings allegedly acquired FGR.

On Monday, September 16, workers gathered at the premises of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Accra, initiating a week-long protest demanding the revocation of the licenses of both FGR and Blue Gold.

However, during a protest at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources on Wednesday, September 18, ministry officials revealed that sector minister Samuel Jinapor had earlier that day terminated FGR’s mining leases.

A press statement from the minister read:

“Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor MP, acting on the advice and recommendation of the Minerals Commission and the Attorney General, pursuant to article 88 of the constitution, sections 5(1), 68(1), and 100(2) of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), and regulation 200(1) of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), and regulation 200(1) of the minerals and mining leases granted to FGR Bogoso Prestea Limited (the company), directed the Minerals Commission to issue a notice of termination to the company, in accordance with regulation 200(4) of L.I.2176.”

The statement explained that the decision was made after reviewing various reports from the Minerals Commission and a Ministerial Committee and following extensive engagement with all stakeholders.

It also emphasised the government’s commitment to managing Ghana’s natural resources efficiently, transparently, and in the best interest of the people.
