The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bono Region, is set to also hold their version of the nationwide demonstration in Sunyani, the regional capital of the Bono Region.
The Regional Secretary for the NDC in the Bono Region, Mr. Dennis Yeboah Twumasi on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, on behalf of the NDC in the Bono Region, wrote to the Regional Police Command, to notify him of their intentions to embark on a demonstration on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at the Regional Office of the Electoral Commission of Ghana as directed by the National Chairman, Hon. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah on Monday, September 9, 2024 after filing nomination form for their presidential candidate, Mr John Mahama.
The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has announced that the party will hold a nationwide demonstration on September 17th against the Electoral Commission over its refusal to commission a forensic audit of the voter register for the December polls.
He stated that the lack of information has raised suspicions, which is why the demonstration has become necessary among other concerns.
Speaking after the filing of nomination forms for their flagbearer, John Mahama at the Electoral Commission’s head office, Mr Nketia said, “Those of you who have been asking us what we would do if they did not comply, this is your answer: on the 17th of this month, the NDC is embarking on a massive nationwide demonstration in all 16 regional capitals.”
He urged members to visit the Electoral Commission offices across the country, and for those in Accra to go to the headquarters, to submit additional petitions.
Mr Nketiah said these petitions should demand that the Electoral Commission conduct itself in a manner that ensures peaceful, free, and fair elections.
The Bono Regional Police Commander on Thursday, invited the leadership of the NDC in the Bono Region to deliberate on the routes for the demonstration and subsequently agreed on the routes proposed by the leadership.
The converging point will be at the Regional Office of the NDC through the Municipal Police Headquarters to the Ghana Post Office. The demonstrators will then proceed through the main Abesim – Kumasi High Way Road to the Regional Office of the Electoral Commission where the leadership of the NDC will present a petition to the Regional Boss of the EC.
The petition, amongst others, is expected to bring to the attention of the EC and the public of the various infractions, that have been discovered by the NDC regarding the voter registration exhibition exercise in the Bono Region and call for immediate correction and dismissal of any EC Office involved in perpetuating that illegality.
