John Dramani Mahama, flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that many ‘scandals’ have remained uninvestigated because the President has no interest in them.
He has therefore promised to investigate those cases, including the expenditure for the 2023 African Games and the PDS scandal.
John Mahama, at a media encounter with journalists in the Bono region as part of his campaign tour Wednesday, September 11, 2024, John Mahama says his next administration will institute a fast track of cases of misappropriation as a means of dealing with corruption.
“We all see the Auditor General’s report after it’s presented to Parliament and the Public Accounts Committee sits. If we virtually go to sleep, nothing happens. I’m advocating that we have a special process where people who are identified to have misappropriated public funds are fast-tracked and justice is done.
“If they are not guilty, they are absolved. If they are guilty, the sanctions that are appropriate are applied. Until we do that and have a deterrence, people are going to continue to think that public money is just to take or misappropriate as and when they want it,” he stated.
“We also said we’ll launch Operation Recover All the Loot and so we’re going to do forensic audits into different funds. The All African Games, we’re going to audit it and I forgot how many athletes there were who could have eaten food worth $50 million. Nobody can understand a thing like this,” he added.
John Mahama continued that, “some of the figures you hear in respect of the All African Games are astounding. We’re going to investigate that.”
The former President also reiterated his plans to launch investigations into the Power Distribution Services (PDS) scandal leading to the loss of money by the State.
“We’re going to go into PDS. Why did we lose $190 million American funding for our electricity and power sector? There are many scandals that have been left uninvestigated because the president is not interested,” he added.
