Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the vice-presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has promised that an NPP-led government would return all excavators seized during the fight against illegal mining.
Addressing chiefs and residents of Prestea Huni Valley and Mpohor in the Western Region, Dr. Opoku Prempeh also stressed that the NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has no plans to ban small-scale mining.
This reassurance comes amid growing calls for the government to prohibit small-scale mining due to the environmental degradation caused by illegal operations, particularly the pollution of water bodies.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh assured the mining communities that the NPP is committed to allowing small-scale miners to continue their work, as long as it is done responsibly and without causing environmental damage.
He highlighted the party’s stance on regulating the sector rather than implementing blanket bans.
“When small-scale miners work, they earn a living and support their families. In Wassa, small-scale miners have helped the NDC win about six seats, but now the NDC says they will shoot and kill small-scale miners. Tell them enough of the lies. We will not shoot or kill anyone.
“We will return all seized excavators so you can work peacefully. This will enable everyone to earn a living and contribute to community development. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will not shut down small-scale mining.
“What we disapprove of is the use of changfans on water bodies. However, those who participate in the government’s community mining scheme will have the opportunity to mine responsibly.”
