On September 7, 2024, tensions flared in a shocking attack involving members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and alleged thugs associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP). According to reports, NDC youth in the Ahafo Region were unjustifiably assaulted by NPP-affiliated attackers. In a particularly violent incident, the home of the NDC’s former Constituency Chairperson was ransacked, and the Ahafo Regional Youth Organizer, Masawudu Suleman, was physically assaulted while in the residence.
The National Youth Wing of the NDC has condemned the attacks, characterizing them as blatant acts of political aggression. In a strong statement, George Opare Addo, the National Youth Organizer of the NDC, expressed outrage at what he described as a calculated attempt by the NPP to undermine the opposition ahead of the December 7, 2024, general elections.
“The NPP, knowing their defeat is imminent, has resorted to weaponizing violence across the country,” Opare Addo declared. He warned that these attacks were a direct assault on the NDC and vowed that the party would not tolerate further provocations.
The NDC Youth Wing has called upon the Ahafo Regional Police to take immediate action and arrest the culprits responsible for the violence. A 48-hour ultimatum was issued, after which the NDC has vowed to retaliate “with full force” if the authorities fail to act. Opare Addo made it clear that if the NPP’s allies within the police force do not ensure justice, the NDC would be left with no option but to take matters into its own hands.
“We will not be intimidated by the NPP or misguided NPP activists within the Police Service,” the NDC Youth Organizer warned. He urged all NDC youth across the country to remain vigilant and prepared to defend themselves at any moment.
This incident highlights the escalating tension between Ghana’s two major political parties as the nation heads toward the highly anticipated December elections. The NDC Youth Wing’s call to action serves as a stark reminder of the volatile political landscape, and the potential for further unrest if the situation is not swiftly addressed.
The NPP has yet to respond to these accusations, while the nation watches closely for the outcome of this brewing political confrontation. All eyes are now on the Ahafo Regional Police to see whether they will meet the NDC’s 48-hour deadline for justice.
