Staff of the Volta River Authority (VRA) have described a proposed draft bill that aims to merge the authority with the Bui Power Authority as a ploy to create a new entity that will then be sold.
Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of VRA, Theophilus Tetteh Ahia, in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, alleged that the bill is only aimed at separating its thermal power plant to make the merger possible which he said will be detrimental to Ghana.
He told Nana Tuffour Boateng that both the VRA and the Bui Power Plant are doing well and need no mergers to make them efficient.
“We oppose this merger completely and we think it is not in the best interest of this country. VRA has been in the system for over 53 years and VRA has operated efficiently and no other entity in the sub-region has operated a hydro plant better than the Volta River Authority.
“Bui has done the same since its inception and they have been very efficient so what is the need to merge Bui to VRA?
“This is just a facade to deceive Ghanaians that we are joining Bui and VRA together and separating the VRA Thermal Power Plant from VRA into an authority and it doesn’t make sense. You are separating the Thermal Power Plant from the VRA to create an entity and sell it and why are we so much into selling state institutions?”
The proposed draft bill aims to merge VRA with Bui Power Authority, combine the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) with the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), and establish an independent Thermal Power Authority, according to a September 4 statement from the VRA.
