The Concerned Citizens of the Komenda Traditional Area have officially informed the Ghana Police Service of their plan to stage a protest against the leasing of the Komenda Sugar Factory to an Indian company.
Originally set for August 13, 2024, in Komenda, the demonstration has been rescheduled to take place in Accra on September 17, 2024.
The protesters are demanding the reversal of the lease agreement, insisting that the factory should return to its original purpose of processing locally grown sugarcane instead of relying on imported raw sugar.
They contend that the lease agreement was executed without proper adherence to procedures and lacked stakeholder consultation.
In a statement issued on September 3, 2024, the residents notified the police in accordance with Section 1 clause 1 of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491).
The group expects at least 5,000 concerned Ghanaians from Accra and surrounding areas to join the protest, which will start at 6:00 am from the 37 Lorry Station in Accra and proceed to the Jubilee House.
They have requested the police to provide necessary support and security to ensure the demonstration is conducted peacefully.
