Flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has said the Akufo-Addo government does not care about the plight of teacher trainees.
He says it is for that reason that the government has failed to address the concerns of their teachers after striking over two months.
According to Mahama, what a caring government does is to negotiate with striking teachers to get students back to school rather than sitting unconcerned for the students to be wandering about just as the Akufo-Addo administration is doing.
Speaking at Peki as part of his campaign tour to the Volta Region, the former President bemoaned the change in the academic calendar of the students due to the striking teachers.
“This government does not care about anything because if they care, teacher trainees from the colleges of education, they’ve been sitting at home for how many months?
“If it’s a government that cares, they will sit down with their teachers and resolve the issue so that our students can go back to school. But I can assure you,NDC is coming,” he said Thursday, August 15, 2024.
Meanwhile, there have been calls for the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to close down the Teacher Training Colleges in response to the strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG).
CETAG’s nationwide strike was initiated on June 14, 2024, citing the government’s failure to implement its conditions of service.
The over two-month-old strike has disrupted academic activities, leaving most campuses deserted by students.
But, GTEC has refused to shut down the colleges.
