Govt strikes agreement with CETAG over Conditions of Service

The government has reached an agreement with the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) on the conditions of service of its members as part of measures to end an ongoing strike.

CETAG withdrew all its services following the government’s directive to freeze the July salaries of its members.

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) on July 22, instructed the Controller and Accountant General’s Department to suspend the salaries of all striking CETAG members, except for the principals of colleges, for July 2024.

In response to this directive, CETAG in a statement on Tuesday, July 23, noted that it is withdrawing all of its services following the directive from the Minister of Education.

However, in a media interview on Friday, August 2, Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, assured that negotiations have been concluded.

“We have concluded the discussions with them. We have actually negotiated and signed on to it. I have signed my portion and all my colleagues who are supposed to sign have signed. In their case, their leadership have also signed. So what is needed is for them to have their national council meeting and also take a decision.

“I must admit that we still have work in progress. The most important issue, even though there were quite a number of issues, was the issue of migration and I am appealing to them to actually hasten their move to be able to meet.”
