UENR TEIN calls for reinstatement of deferred students by the school management over fees

The Tertiary Educational Institution Network (TEIN) of the Students’ Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for a swift reinstatement of students deferred by the school management.

The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) on Friday, July 19, 2024 issued out text massages to students who, according to the school, have not been able to make full payment of their fees.

The message read in part ”Dear … (name of affected student), this message is to inform you that, due to your inability to meet the deadline for registration of Semester 2 courses, you have been deferred from your program of study”

Many affected students, have expressed worry and concern by the decision of the school management in taking this decision at this early time after few weeks of reopening of school.

This decision by the school management, has caused uneasiness amongst the affected students who appear to be on the majority.

It will be recalled that the school management on 23rd May, 2024 by a memo from the office of the registrar announced the introduction of a Gh₵150 additional money to the fee which was described as ”online support allowance”.

”Following the government’s approval of online Teaching Support Allowance (OTSA) for Teaching Staff of public universities, it is announced for the information of all students and the university community that the fees for the 2023/2024 Academic year has been increased by an amount of ”One Hundred and Fifty Ghana Cedis”.

The Students’ Wing of the NDC, sees this decision by the school management as a ‘harsh’ one citing current economic hardships including hikes of utilities and taxes and called on the school to be compassionate on its decision.

The president of the UENR TEIN further urged the school management to comeout with a payment schedule that will give students the opportunity to make full payment of their fees. Amongst the suggestions was to reopen registration portal for affected students who all made 70% payment in their first semester to pay 50% of the remaining fees to register for their semester courses and then demand full payment only at the time of exams. To them, this will afford the affected students the ability to make full payment.
