Government Must Announce Cancellation of SSNIT Hotels Sale or Face Nationwide Demonstrations – Minority Caucus

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has issued a stern ultimatum to the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, demanding the immediate cancellation of the proposed sale of a 60% stake in the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) hotels. Failure to comply, the Caucus warns, will result in nationwide demonstrations.

The call comes amid rising tensions after the recent withdrawal of Minister of Agriculture Bryan Acheampong’s company from a controversial takeover bid. This move was perceived as a result of intense pressure from organized labor, which strongly opposed the government’s initial decision.

Despite this withdrawal, the Minority Caucus insists that a mere retreat is insufficient. They demand that the government publicly declare the cessation of any plans to sell the SSNIT hotels. The Caucus argues that the intended sale, shrouded in suspicion and described as a sweetheart deal, undermines the interests of the Ghanaian workforce and lacks transparency.

“The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority in Parliament, organized labor, civil society, and the people of Ghana have voiced their opposition to this questionable arrangement. It is imperative that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government listens and acts accordingly,” stated Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson.

The Caucus has further emphasized that until the government issues a clear statement cancelling the sale, they will cease cooperation in parliamentary affairs. This non-cooperation will escalate to nationwide protests if the government does not comply by Tuesday, 16th July 2024.

In addition, the Minority Caucus has called for the immediate resignation of the board members of SSNIT, the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA), and the Minister of Employment. They accuse these officials of complicity in the alleged state capture and failing to protect the interests of Ghanaian workers.

The ultimatum sets the stage for a significant political standoff, highlighting the growing discontent among various sectors of Ghanaian society over the government’s handling of the SSNIT hotels’ sale.
