CDD-GHANA Organizes Workshop with Clergy on LGBTQ+ Bill in Techiman

The Centre for Democratic Development Ghana (CDD-GHANA) recently organized a two-day workshop in Techiman, focusing on the LGBTQ+ bill currently in Parliament. Held at the Akina City Hotel in the Bono East region, the event saw participation from various clergy members and media personnel.

Micheal Augustus Akagbor, the Senior Programs Officer at CDD-GHANA, addressed attendees alongside his team. Akagbor emphasized the importance of engaging the clergy and the media to provide a comprehensive understanding of the bill. “The bill has been passed in Parliament, and it is now awaiting the government’s signature to become law,” he stated.

The workshop facilitated an open forum where numerous pastors from Techiman shared their insights and perspectives on the LGBTQ+ bill. This engagement was crucial in ensuring that religious leaders and the media are well-informed about the bill’s contents and implications.

Lawyer Williams, the Executive Director of ACILA in Accra, also presented at the workshop. He elaborated on how the constitution would function once the bill is signed into law. Williams clarified that while the law acknowledges the existence of LGBTQ+ individuals, it stipulates that Ghana does not accept this community. Nonetheless, these individuals retain their right to live without rejection, though penalties will be imposed on those who violate the rules once the bill becomes law.

Participants, including clergy members, expressed their views and understanding of the LGBTQ+ bill during the event. The workshop provided a platform for meaningful dialogue and a better grasp of the bill’s potential impact on Ghanaian society.
