Desist from politicising military operations or face consequences – Former national security minister

Francis Poku, a former national security minister under the John Agyekum Kufuor-led government, has warned Ghanaians of the dire consequences that await them if they do not stop politicising military operations.

The former statesman lamented the increasing politicisation of military operations by some individuals in the country.

He emphasized that the growing trend of demonizing every military operation whenever there is a change in government should not be encouraged.

During Ghana’s Republic Day celebration on July 1, Poku delivered a lecture highlighting the importance of providing non-partisan support to all security agencies.

With the upcoming December 7 general elections, Poku urged security agencies to conduct honest, regular assessments and review their operations and strategies to eliminate any looming threats in the country.

“It must be an honest assessment. Let us assess, let us communicate because if we’re going to have elections, decisions are taken; as it is to the deployment, they must originate from the joint intelligence committee, deciding who should go where. And please, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, let us not politicise operations,” he expressed.

Poku further recommended that security apparatuses and authorities establish a system of trust and communication to dispel uncertainties and provide a strong security foundation for any assigned operation.

“I advise that there must be communication. This is the reason why they are deploying. There must be a good security foundation for the operation, but the military must be accountable, first of all conferring with the commander-in-chief and also the origin of the operations. Is it from the Joint Intelligence Committee or what is it? But again, respect for the rule of law, human rights, and accountability,” Poku mentioned.
