Former President John Dramani Mahama had the honor of meeting with Ambassador Park Kyongsig of South Korea to discuss the invaluable support and investments South Korea has committed to Ghana. Mahama expressed his profound gratitude to South Korea for forgiving Ghana’s debt, a gesture that will significantly bolster the country’s debt restructuring efforts amid challenging economic times. He highlighted the importance of this support in stabilizing Ghana’s economy and fostering sustainable growth.
The discussion also touched upon the $2 billion framework arrangement, a substantial investment poised to impact crucial sectors such as healthcare, education, environment, and agriculture. Mahama emphasized the transformative potential of this arrangement, particularly in enhancing food sufficiency through the introduction of new rice varieties. South Korea’s commitment to bolstering Ghana’s agricultural sector was lauded as a significant step towards achieving food security and improving the livelihoods of Ghanaian farmers.
Additionally, Mahama shared with Ambassador Park the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) plans to establish rice mills and Farmer Service Centres. These initiatives aim to further strengthen Ghana’s agricultural sector by providing essential support and infrastructure to farmers.
As the country prepares for the upcoming elections, Mahama raised concerns about the independence of the Electoral Commission. He urged South Korea and the international community to advocate for free and fair elections in Ghana, stressing the importance of this issue for the nation’s democratic integrity.
