Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ambulance trial, testified before an Accra High Court that he had privately approached the Attorney-General to argue for his acquittal, asserting his innocence. This occurred before his lawyers submitted a plea of no case.
During cross-examination by DPP Yvonne Attakorah Obuobisa, Jakpa explained that he had contacted the Attorney-General to express gratitude for his assistance in securing bail. Jakpa claimed both he and the first accused were innocent, and that only Dr. Sylvester Anemana had a case to answer.
The Attorney-General, Jakpa said, assured him that the primary target was the first accused, Ato Forson, but promised to secure Jakpa’s acquittal at the no case submission stage. Jakpa further implicated former Finance Minister Seth Terkper and Sherry Ayittey in the case’s complications.
“In 2017, I discussed on Joy FM how Seth Terkper sabotaged the ambulance trial. Ato Forson called in to defend his boss, and we exchanged words. I told him to stick to his parliamentary work because Hon Seth Terkper had been sabotaging this project since he was Deputy Minister of Finance,” Jakpa recounted.
He added, “I told Attorney-General that as of July 17, 2022, he should make me the prosecution witness to expose Seth Terkper and Sherry Ayittey.”
