I still don’t know why I was detained – Naa Koryoo

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor says she still does not know why she was detained.

Ms Okunor was detained overnight by the Ghana Police Service (GPS) last Friday, June 7, a move that sparked widespread outrage among NDC members and sympathisers.

The police have explained that the docket on the arrest of the NDC parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East has been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney-General for study and advice.

A statement from the Service indicated that Naa Koryoo was cautioned “on the offence of transfer of firearms without authority” and granted bail along with three others.

But speaking in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday, she said she was yet to be officially informed of the reason for her arrest and subsequent incarceration for close to 16 hours.

“I was invited by the CID headquarters on Friday around 9 am and when I got there my statement was taken together with my security guard and my driver. We sat there, no one was saying anything to us until 6 pm when we were whisked into the car and straight to the Cantonment Police Station. They put us behind bars,” she stated.

Responding to what reason she was given, she said “No reason. As of now, I am still yet to know the reason for the arrest. But later in the day, I heard that there were some discrepancies in the spelling of my name. I heard there was an omission of one letter from the policeman who issued a renewal receipt for the license of my gun.

“But on all the documents that I have my name is correct. So now I am being blamed for the fault of a police officer who mistakenly did not spell my name correctly.”
