Military officer assaulted allegedly by illegal miners at Wassa Akyempim

A military officer named Timothy Adzakosi who is believed to be an officer from Tarkwa-Aboso military quarters has been reportedly assaulted by assailants believed to be illegal miners at Wassa Akyempim in the Western region on Friday, June 7, 2024.

It is reported that the victim was among three other colleagues who visited a galamsey site in the area.

According to some eyewitnesses, they saw the military officer being chased by a mob suspected to be illegal miners from the galamsey site. However, after the hot chase, the victim gave in as his strength failed him upon reaching a fuel-filling station at Wassa Akyempim.

At that instant, the assailants beat him and further inflicted wounds on his hands.

The residents indicated that the military has been embarking on several visits to galamsey sites in the enclave.

The other officers subsequently took to their heels to avoid further attacks.

Upon hearing of the dreadful incident, the Assembly Member of Wassa Akyempim electoral area, Joseph Akomiah, and his unit community chairman, Agogo went to the aid of the victim who was left in a pool of blood.

He was subsequently sent to Wassa Ateiku Health Center for treatment.

However, the police have launched investigations into the matter to locate the perpetrators who are currently on the run.

Some residents are fleeing the town out of fear of a reprisal attack from the military.
