We will not allow coercive forces of state to be used against us – Asiedu Nketia says upon release of detained NDC parliamentary candidate

The Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has stated that members of the party will not allow the coercive powers of state to be used against them.

He said Ghanaians are in bondage, thus the NDC as the main opposition party, will ensure that there is freedom in the country.

“The laws of the country are meant for all of us. There should be no discrimination in applying them. We will not be victims of the peace that the country enjoys. Freedom is not free. We will fight for freedom. We will not allow the coercive powers of the state to be used against us,” he said at a press briefing held at the party’s headquarters on June 8 to announce the release of the parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, Naa Koryoo Okunor, from police detention.

It would be recalled that Phyllis Naa Koryo Okunor, along with Mustapha Mohammed and Abdul Aziz Musah, were arrested last week.

The trio was apprehended while traveling in a Honda CRV saloon car with registration number GX-2044-19 near the Electoral Commission (EC) Office at Ofaakor. They were found in possession of a firearm which was linked to a stabbing incident involving Ato Koomson, the son of the current MP and the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

He was reportedly stabbed near the EC Office at Ofaakor in the Central Region. The police recovered a pump-action gun with four rounds of ammunition from the vehicle, as detailed in their statement.
Naa Koryo however clarified that the said firearm is legally registered and that for the fear of her life, “I have every right to protect myself because the happenings at Kasoa necessitate that I do so.

Mr Nketia urged the Ghana Police Service to be circumspect in the handling of issues of such nature in the lead up to the 2024 elections.

“We cannot go this way towards election 2024,” the NDC Chairman stated.
