AriseGhana has been following keenly the trial of Hon. Ato Forson and Mr Richard Jakpa in relation to an ambulance supply contract entered into by the erstwhile Mahama administration, which has brought to the fore some startling revelations.
The latest revelation is the open testimony by the third Accused, Mr Richard Jakpa, to the effect that the Attorney-General has called, met and engaged him severally sometimes at odd and ungodly hours to persuade him to testify falsely in order to secure conviction for Hon Ato Forson.
Curiously, the Attorney-General was present in court at the time but could not object to Mr Jakpa’s revelation which had indicted him. Rather, he chose to engage the media on the matter in an attempt to save his already soiled reputation.
In the wake of the wake of the spirited attempt by the Attorney-General to repair his tattered and badly bruised image, the opposition NDC released an audio recording of the telephone conversation between the the Attorney-General and Mr Richard Jakpa in which Godfred Dame was heard impressing upon, cajoling, teaching, coaxing and virtually begging Mr Richard Jakpa to skew his testimony to aid the prosecution to obtain conviction against Hon Ato Forson.
This conduct by the Attorney-Genera has been described variously as dishonest, unethical and criminal. Various legal brains and lawyers have publicly called for his resignation or dismissal if he fails to resign honourably.
AriseGhana is compelled to join the numerous calls for Mr Godfred Dame to be relieved of his duties as the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice now considering the fact that he has become a Minister for Injustice rather than a Minister for Justice. His conduct demonstrates clearly that he cannot do good to all manner of persons as enjoined by his Oath of Office.
It is unthinkable that the man who claims to have a watertight case against the accused persons would stoop so low to engage in this kind of misconduct. His conduct is believed to run contrary to the Evidence Decree and makes him liable for criminal prosecution. If the man supposed to be the leader of the bar can desecrate the ethics of the bar in this manner and fashion, then the bar is in grave danger if he continues to lead it.
We therefore call on the President to sack Mr Godfred Dame without any further delay in order to
restore some confidence in the office of Attorney-General as well as the Bar of Ghana.
