Investigative journalist and former editor-in-chief of the Fourth Estate, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has commended North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for consistently exercising oversight on the executive arm of government.
According to Manasseh, a lot of scandals and rot could have been prevented if more MPs served as checks on the executive, a trait exhibited by Mr Ablakwa.
Mr. Ablakwa has earned a reputation for holding the executive and the government accountable, having exposed several scandals under the Akufo-Addo administration.
The North Tongu lawmaker has consistently exposed government actions he deems dubious and a rip-off of taxpayers’ money.
Recently, he brought to light the sale of 60% of SSNIT’s stake in some four hotels to Rock City Hotel Limited, a company owned by Abetifi MP and Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.
Mr Awuni in a post on X (Twitter) on Monday, suggested that if a single MP could achieve this, then the parliament could play a crucial role in safeguarding the country, given that many dubious deals are vetted by a parliamentary committee before approval.

“Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has shown that our MPs can be useful in keeping the executive in check. If one MP can do this, then parliament can save us because many of the shady deals and confidential documents go through one parliamentary committee or the other before getting passed,” the award-winning journalist posted.
Meanwhile, Mr Ablakwa in pursuit of stopping the sale of SSNIT’s stake to the Abetifi MP, has served notice to the Ghana Police Service to lead a demonstration scheduled for June 18, 2024, against the ongoing sale of the hotels to Mr Bryan Acheampong, despite his May 17 petition to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).
The four (4) hotels are; Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Royal Beach Resort, Ridge Royal Hotel and Elmina Beach Resort.
