The conveners of the “Dumsor Must Stop” protest, a movement aimed at addressing the persistent issue of erratic electricity supply, have officially announced new details regarding their upcoming demonstration. In a formal notice, the organizers, including notable figures such as Yvonne Nelson, Selorm Dramani Dzramado, and Henry Osei Akoto, have expressed their gratitude to the Ghana Police Service for their support in facilitating the exercise of their constitutional right to protest under Article 21(1)(C) and (5) of the 1992 Constitution.
The organizers have outlined the following updates:
1. New Date and Time: The protest will now take place on Saturday, June 8, 2024. Participants are expected to assemble from 2:00 PM and the event will conclude by 10:00 PM.
2. Purpose: The demonstration aims to highlight public frustration over the continuous issue of erratic electricity supply, commonly known as “dumsor.”
3. Format: The protest will be conducted in the form of a vigil, emphasizing a peaceful and reflective nature.
4. Route and Locations: Protesters will gather in front of the University of Ghana and march to the Tetteh Quarshie Roundabout. A podium will be set up at the roundabout for speeches, after which participants will disperse.
5. Traffic Management: The organizers are committed to minimizing inconvenience to the public. Efforts will be made to ensure the flow of traffic along the route between the University of Ghana and the Tetteh Quarshie Roundabout during the protest.
In accordance with Section 1 of the Public Order Act (Act 491), the protest organizers have duly notified the police of these changes more than five days prior to the event. They have emphasized their intention to cooperate fully with law enforcement to ensure that the demonstration is conducted within legal parameters.
The conveners have underscored the importance of this protest as a means for Ghanaians to voice their dissatisfaction with the ongoing power supply issues. They encourage all participants to adhere to the guidelines provided and to maintain a peaceful and orderly conduct throughout the event.
