In a bold and assertive move, Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a public challenge to Paul Adom-Otchere, the host of Good Evening Ghana (GEG) and the Board Chair of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL). This challenge comes in the wake of what Gyamfi describes as a “wishy-washy” response from Adom-Otchere to his exposé on the rehabilitation of the Sunyani Airport.
The project in question, the Sunyani Airport rehabilitation (Phase one), has garnered significant attention due to allegations that it was awarded to Abraham Bawumia, the brother of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Gyamfi’s exposé raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest and the transparency of the awarding process.
In a statement, Gyamfi expressed his readiness to engage Adom-Otchere in a public debate on the matter, emphasizing the importance of accountability and transparency. “Even though the NDC has boycotted your once-revered GEG show, which has now been reduced to a sponsored NPP-footsoldiers platform, I am prepared to debate you on this subject on any day and neutral platform of your choosing, given your position as the Board Chair of the GACL. I dare you to accept this simple challenge,” Gyamfi declared.
The NDC’s boycott of the Good Evening Ghana show stems from perceived biases and the program’s alleged shift towards promoting the interests of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Despite this, Gyamfi remains determined to address the issues surrounding the Sunyani Airport project, seeking a platform that ensures an impartial and fair discussion.
Adom-Otchere, known for his vocal presence in Ghanaian media and his influential role in aviation oversight, has yet to respond to Gyamfi’s challenge. The potential debate promises to be a significant event, offering both parties an opportunity to present their perspectives and evidence to the public.
As the public awaits Adom-Otchere’s response, the challenge highlights ongoing concerns about governance, transparency, and the allocation of public contracts in Ghana. Whether the debate takes place or not, the call for greater scrutiny and accountability in government projects remains a pressing issue for many Ghanaians.
