NPP activists angered by Alan Kyerematen’s call for a Christian leader

The founder and leader of the Movement for Change has faced backlash from supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after advocating for Ghanaians to vote for a “Christian leader.”

Alan Kyerematen clarified that, since Ghana is primarily a Christian nation, it would be wise to elect a President who embodies Christian values in the upcoming December general elections.

While addressing congregants of the Church of Pentecost Dr. Wyatt Assembly over the weekend, Mr. Kyerematen said “As a predominantly Christian nation, as Christians, it is our responsibility that we elect a Christian leader, who is also a Christ like leader.

“We want a leader who has the vision to bring hope to the hopeless, but we also want a leader who will be a servant leader to serve the people and not to Lord over them. We also want a leader who has integrity. These were the characteristics of our Lord Jesus who today is risen,” he said.

However, Mr. Kyerematen’s assertion has angered NPP activists because their flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, is a Muslim.

They described his statement as divisive and contrary to the religious inclusivity in Ghanaian politics.

NPP Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah called on Ghanaian to reject the statement by the former Trades Minister.

“We must unite to reject this nation-wrecking comment. Such dangerous rhetoric must not be tolerated, and we must denounce it whenever it rears its ugly head. Let us remember that we are one people. We do not have a Christian Ghana or a Muslim Ghana, just one united Ghana. Together, we have been working towards building a better future for our nation in this Fourth Republic, and we must keep it that way.”

Meanwhile, Head Pastor at the ICGC Calvary Temple, Reverend Anthony Cudjoe insists God can use anyone regardless of their religion, to develop the country.

“Sometimes you hear Ghanaians saying ‘we want a Christian leader’, but listen a Muslim can lead this nation and Ghana could be better. If God wants to do it He will use anything. Why should God call Silas ‘my anointed’, he was not a Jew.

“Silas was from Persia, those kind of people who controlled Israel, but it got to this man’s turn and God used him to restore everything to Israel and God said ‘I’m not even going to use any king who will save us, but Silas is my anointed, he is my chosen one’,” he stated.
