The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has expressed gratitude for the recent propositions put forth by former President John Dramani Mahama regarding the importation of spare parts into the country, contingent upon the victory of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the forthcoming general elections.
According to the leadership of the Association, these propositions are perceived as a significant transformative force for the spare parts dealership industry within the nation. This sentiment was articulated in a statement dated March 7 and endorsed by the Head of Communication, Takyi Addo.
“The proposal to establish a fixed rate for spare parts importation, as advocated by the former President, is deemed a pivotal measure in eradicating corruption at the ports and safeguarding the investments of our members,” the statement affirmed.
“The Association contends that a fixed rate, rather than a flat rate, will mitigate the risk of collusion among Customs officers at the port, thereby ensuring a fair and transparent importation process,” the statement elucidated.
“Mr. Mahama has pledged to engage with all importers, recognizing that goods imported into the country originate from various destinations worldwide, as part of the implementation of the fixed rate. We commend former President Mahama for his foresight in advocating for banking institutions to aid importers in clearing goods from the ports, which will contribute to stable investments and sectoral expansion,” the statement added.
The Association commended the former President’s initiative to engage with all embassies, particularly the Korean Embassy, which mandates the deposit of an amount ranging from GHC400,000 to GHC600,000 into an account for visa issuance.
“This initiative underscores his dedication to fostering a conducive business environment for spare parts dealers. Additionally, we appreciate the decision not to relocate but rather redevelop the Abossey Okai spare parts hub, which aligns with the interests of our members. We are optimistic that the redevelopment will enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the hub,” the Association stated.
With the general elections on the horizon, the Association implored its members to remain calm.
“We recognize the importance of leadership in meticulously evaluating the options presented by political leaders. We believe that a collaborative and informed approach will result in decisions that serve the best interests of our members and the industry at large.
“We eagerly anticipate continued engagement with political leaders to ensure the growth and prosperity of the spare parts dealership sector in Ghana.”
