Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has disclosed that Unilever Ghana has opted to transfer its tea production operations to Nigeria, citing the ongoing economic challenges faced in Ghana. This revelation was made on Monday, March 11, subsequent to President Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation address in February.
The Member of Parliament for Ajumako Enyan Essiam highlighted the possibility of other companies following suit due to the current economic downturn in the country. Dr. Ato Forson expressed his concerns about the Akufo-Addo government’s management of the nation, emphasizing the alarming trend of businesses relocating, which should be a cause for worry among Ghanaians.
In his capacity as a former Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. Ato Forson’s comments underscore the growing unease regarding Ghana’s economic stability and its potential impact on local enterprises.
“To reiterate, Mr. Speaker, Unilever Ghana, a longstanding producer of the renowned Lipton tea in Ghana, has ceased its tea production locally and shifted operations to Nigeria.”
“The relocation of Lipton tea production to Nigeria has resulted in job losses for Ghanaians, which is distressing news for our workforce.”
“Furthermore, Mr. Speaker, despite the commissioning of the Pepsodent production plant by President Akufo-Addo five years ago, Unilever Ghana has been unable to commence its Pepsodent production in Ghana due to the deteriorating business environment.”
