The primary advocate for the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values bill, Samuel Nartey George, expresses optimism that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will honor his commitment by enacting the legislation. On Wednesday, February 28, Parliament approved the bill, commonly known as the anti-LGBTQ bill.
This legislation explicitly prohibits LGBTQ activities and criminalizes their promotion, advocacy, and financial support. Violators may face imprisonment ranging from six months to three years, while those endorsing or sponsoring such activities could be subject to a three-to-five-year jail term.
Prior to the bill’s approval, proponents filed a motion for a further review of its provisions. Samuel George, addressing journalists in Accra on the day of passage, conveyed confidence that the President would uphold his pledge to prevent the establishment of gay activities during his tenure by endorsing the bill.
He highlighted the belief that this information would promptly reach President Akufo-Addo through the Speaker’s Secretariat. Emphasizing the President’s assurances to the Anglican Church in the Eastern Region, Samuel George stressed the expectation that Akufo-Addo would adhere to his commitment to address anything promoting LGBTQ, asserting that the recently passed bill is the most effective measure in this regard. Samuel George expressed hope that the President would remain true to his words and uphold his stance on preventing the establishment of LGBTQ practices.
