“We lack a robust economy, so what guidance can he offer?,” Pianim questions Ofori-Atta’s recent appointment

Renowned Ghanaian economist Kwame Pianim has expressed disappointment in the appointment of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as a Senior Presidential Adviser and Special Envoy for International Trade by President Akufo Addo. Mr. Ofori-Atta was relieved of his finance minister position on February 14, being replaced by Mohammed Amin Adam. The announcement of Ofori-Atta’s new role came from Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare on February 15.

Speaking on the AM Show, Pianim, a leading member of the NPP, criticized the appointment, asserting that it undermines the positive effects of the recent ministerial reshuffle. He emphasized concerns about Ofori-Atta’s role in the financial and economic crisis and his impact on Ghana’s ability to pay bills and participate in the Eurobond market.

Pianim questioned the rationale behind appointing Ofori-Atta as an envoy, especially considering the current economic challenges facing Ghana. He urged a reconsideration of the practice of appointing former ministers to advisory roles in the presidency, stating that it does not contribute positively.

Additionally, Pianim expressed dissatisfaction with the resignation of Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu from his role as Majority Leader in Parliament. He believed that Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, an icon in Parliament, should have been retained to manage Parliament and foster collaboration among MPs ahead of the 2024 elections.

Touching on the 24-hour economy proposed by NDC flagbearer John Mahama, Pianim found the policy lacking clarity. He questioned the feasibility of a 24-hour economy in Ghana, highlighting challenges such as insufficient electricity for even one shift. Pianim suggested a careful consideration of practical solutions and urged a more thoughtful approach to policy implementation.
