Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council cautions Begoro chief against engaging in partisan politics

The Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council has cautioned the Begro Ankobeahene Baffour Owiredu Agyarko Mintah against repeating statements that may be deemed as partisan and called off the case against him.

The decision was taken after a closed-door meeting at the Ofori Panin fie, Kyebi.

It was an anxious atmosphere before the commencement of proceedings Monday Morning at the Ofori Panin Fie.

Although it was a usual traditional hearing day of cases at the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council, this particular case had much interest.

Only Elders of the Traditional Council led by the Akyem Abuakwa Queen Mother, Nana Dokuaa Adutwumwaa and parties to the case were allowed to the inner chamber of the Ofori Panin fie for judgment.

The Ankobeahene Baffour Owiredu Agyarko is said to have apologised for the remarks after being advised, thus ending the matter.

Lawyer for the respondent Ankobeahene Baffour Owiredu Agyarko Mintah, explained that the Traditional Council had called off the matter after cautioning the chief against repeating such remarks in the future.

He engaged the media after the closed-door meeting of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council.

“We all know what had transpired, we came before Nananom for the matter to be heard. The chiefs upon consultation decided to step in and bring the matter to an end. They called the parties into chambers and gave them advice. The bottom line is that the case has come to an end, it won’t be called again.”

Two chiefs, Otweresohene Daasebre Ofosu Kwabi Ayebiahwe, Twafohene Baffour Sakyi Amakwaa and a linguist Okyeame Owusu within the Begro Traditional Area petitioned the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council seeking an imposition of a sanction on the Ankobeahene for statement they deem amounting to participating in partisan politics during a campaign durbar of the NDC flagbearer, John Mahama

The three petitioners cited four statements the Ankobeahene Baffour Owiredu Agyarko Mintah made that they found partisan;

1.That the flagbearer of the NDC is the incoming President of Ghana.

2.That the people of Begoro must vote massively for the flagbearer of the NDC.

3. That the 24-hour economic policy of the NDC government will rescue the people of Begoro from poverty.

4. That all Nananom have invoked the gods by pouring libation against breaking the 8 mantra of the NPP government

The 1992 Constitution states categorically in Article 276 (1) that, “a chief shall not take part in active party politics; and any chief wishing to do so and seeking election to Parliament shall abdicate his stool or skin”.

Several Chiefs continue to make statement that connotes aligning with political parties.

Political analyst and observers felt the summons by the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council was selective when the news broke out last week.
