The National Democratic Congress (NDC), under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama, has promised to eliminate the burdensome taxes imposed by the NPP government, such as the E-Levy, killer port charges, and betting tax.
Fifi Kwetey, the NDC’s General Secretary, emphasised this commitment at a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, stating that Mahama is dedicated to reviving the economy and implementing tax reforms.
The NDC, he added, plans to increase the government’s share of natural resource profits to fund development and reduce the tax burden on the people.
Fifi Kwetey highlighted Mahama’s May 2022 promise to abolish the E-Levy despite resistance from the NPP government and their MPs, questioning Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia’s claim that he will now abolish the tax and others should he be elected president.
The NDC scribe reassured Ghanaians that the NDC would prioritise financial prudence, cut out waste, and ensure that the Bank of Ghana adhered to ethical banking and financial practices. Kwetey also emphasised the NDC’s plans to restore faith in the country’s financial system and implement sweeping reforms at the Bank of Ghana.
Mahama has visited eleven out of the sixteen regions of Ghana with his #BuildingGhanaTour to listen to the people and present his vision and message of hope. As General Secretary, Kwetey has accompanied Mahama on some of these tours and has communicated the NDC’s promises to the diverse demographic groups nationwide.
Some of the assurances made by Mahama on the tour include plans for economic revitalisation and tax reform, as well as a comprehensive approach to fighting corruption at all levels.
Mahama has also criticised the dubious contract agreements by the government, pledged to abolish ex-gratia payments to members of the executive branch of government, and committed to initiating constitutional, political, and governance reforms to restore confidence in Ghana’s democracy.
