King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer, as announced by Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace has announced that King Charles is facing a cancer diagnosis, which was discovered during recent treatment for an enlarged prostate. The specific type of cancer has not been disclosed, but the palace revealed that the King has commenced “regular treatments” since Monday.

Despite the diagnosis, the King remains optimistic about his treatment and eagerly anticipates resuming full public duties at the earliest opportunity. Personally informing his sons, Prince William has been in regular contact, while Prince Harry, residing in the United States, has spoken to his father and plans to travel to the UK in the coming days.

The King will temporarily suspend public engagements, with other senior royals expected to step in during his treatment. Details regarding the cancer stage or prognosis are not being disclosed. The 75-year-old monarch, back in London from Sandringham, Norfolk, will undergo outpatient treatment, continuing his constitutional role, including paperwork and private meetings.

Although the King will pause public events, the constitutional mechanism allows for the appointment of “counsellors of state” if the head of state is unable to fulfill official duties. Presently, Queen Camilla, Prince William, Princess Anne, and Prince Edward are designated, with Prince Harry and Prince Andrew no longer considered as non-working royals.

The King, who waved to crowds at a church service in Sandringham on Sunday, had a prostate procedure at a private London hospital over a week ago. Previously, he had chosen to publicize his prostate treatment to encourage men to undergo prostate checks. The NHS website reported increased awareness and inquiries about prostate conditions after the King’s disclosure.

Acknowledging the increased risk of cancer with age, UK figures show that over a third (36%) of new cancer cases annually are in individuals aged 75 and over. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, and Commons Speaker Sir Lyndsay Hoyle have extended their well-wishes for the King’s full and speedy recovery.
