First Deputy Speaker Examines Motivations Behind Political Rush to Parliament

Joseph Osei-Owusu, Member of Parliament for Bekwai and First Deputy Speaker, has shared insights into the motivations behind politicians’ eagerness to secure parliamentary seats. Speaking in an interview with Keminni Amanor on TV3, Osei-Owusu debunked the belief that Members of Parliament receive substantial remuneration, emphasizing that being an MP is “the least attractive of all opportunities” in politics.

Reflecting on his own journey from grassroots politics, Osei-Owusu expressed his curiosity about the prevalent rush towards parliamentary roles. He clarified that despite the perception of better financial benefits, MPs face significant challenges in managing resources for themselves, their drivers, and their constituencies.

During the NPP primaries on Saturday, January 27, Osei-Owusu acknowledged that while being an MP comes with challenges, leaders should refrain from complaining and instead encourage aspiring politicians to understand the realities of the role. He highlighted the allure of being identified as an MP in public, a factor contributing to the widespread desire to occupy parliamentary seats.

Addressing the upcoming changes in Parliament, Osei-Owusu mentioned the exit of 18 NPP MPs, paving the way for new faces expected to assume office on January 7, 2025, following their swearing-in. Despite the challenges, Osei-Owusu stressed the importance of not discouraging individuals with aspirations to enter the realm of parliamentary politics.
