GJA Advocates Media Boycott of Hawa Koomson Following Assault on Journalist

Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has urged media houses and journalists to enforce a media blackout on Mavis Hawa Koomson, the Minister of Fisheries and Member of the Awutu Senya East constituency in the Central Region. This call comes in the aftermath of the police’s failure to apprehend individuals who physically attacked David Kobina, a journalist with Cape FM in the Central Region, during the NPP’s parliamentary aspirant vetting.

Addressing the media, Dwumfour expressed concern over the lack of response from the NPP and the police in addressing the assault, leading to the decision for a complete media blackout.

“We submitted written petitions to the NPP with some demands, and the deadline has long passed, but we regret to announce that nothing has been done, and we are forced to advise ourselves in the light of the cold silence,” he stated.

Considering the ongoing incidents of attacks against journalists and media practitioners and based on gathered intelligence, in consultation with partner institutions, the GJA is urging all media houses to observe a total media blackout on Mavis Hawa Koomson and to distance themselves from her as a minister of state. This decision is rooted in the belief that there are individuals around the MP who may pose a threat to the lives of journalists and other media practitioners.
