Alfred Nii Kotey Ashie secured victory as the National Democratic Congress’ chosen Parliamentary Candidate for the Odododiodioo constituency in anticipation of the 2024 General Elections. In the recent Sunday election, he garnered 1209 votes, while his rival, Emmanuel Nii Okai Laryea, received 952 votes out of the total 2161 votes cast.
The election witnessed the participation of over 2100 NDC delegates from the Odododiodioo constituency in the Greater Accra Region. This electoral process had faced a temporary halt due to an injunction filed by disqualified parliamentary aspirant, Michael Nii Yarboi Anan. However, following the dismissal of Mr. Yarboi Anan’s interlocutory injunction application, the election proceeded as scheduled.
After clinching victory, Mr. Kotey Ashie addressed the delegates, pledging to work towards uniting the party in preparation for the December polls.
Background:
In November 2023, the Functional Executive Committee of the NDC disqualified Michael Nii Yarboi Annan from participating in the parliamentary election in the Odododiodioo Constituency. The party’s report explained that a special committee’s findings justified the disqualification, citing Article 41(8)(b) of the NDC Constitution. This article stipulates that a member must be an active participant at the constituency level for the four years preceding the date of filing nominations.
Due to a court injunction obtained by the disqualified candidate, the party indefinitely postponed the primary in the Odododiodioo constituency. However, with the court’s dismissal, the party has now granted clearance for the primary to proceed.
