COP Alex Mensah Asserts Ghana’s Unreadiness for a ‘Honeymoon’ Period, Criticizing Mahama’s Approach

Retired Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah voices skepticism about the readiness of Ghana to afford a grace period, commonly referred to as a ‘honeymoon,’ before addressing pressing economic challenges. COP Mensah suggests that former President John Mahama’s request for such a grace period, if he were to assume the presidency after winning the December 7 general elections, indicates a lack of concrete policies to tackle the country’s economic issues.

In an interview with JoyNews’ Nana Boakye Yiadom, the retired COP, who is vying for the Bekwai constituency parliamentary seat on the NPP ticket, questions the intention behind Mr. Mahama’s call for a ‘honeymoon’ period. COP Mensah argues that this request reflects a lack of commitment to advancing the country’s development and raises concerns about the absence of substantive policies.

“We are not ready for a honeymoon; the country is not ready for a honeymoon. We are moving on,” COP Mensah asserts, emphasizing that granting a two-year grace period would leave only two years for governance, with the subsequent year being an election year.

COP Mensah contends that the NDC flagbearer for the 2024 general elections is not prepared to restore the country to its previous state and implies that Mr. Mahama’s call for a ‘honeymoon’ period indicates a lack of readiness and substantial policies.

“Honeymoon means he’s not ready. He doesn’t have any policy. How can we give you a honeymoon when we know that people are suffering? People are suffering, and you want to get a honeymoon. He doesn’t have anything good for this country; he’s not ready,” COP Mensah stresses.

He urges Ghanaians to grant the ruling New Patriotic Party the opportunity to continue the country’s development, cautioning against a potential setback if the country regresses. COP Mensah’s remarks come in response to Mr. Mahama’s plea to Ghanaians for a grace period to revive the economy before addressing specific demands from trade and labor groups.
