Labour will vote with hunger and anger in 2024 election – Gyampo replies Mahama

President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana, University of Ghana chapter, Prof Ransford Gyampo has stated that Labour Union will vote with hunger and anger in the 2024 polls.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Monday, January 15, he said that Labour conditions of service must be met irrespective of whoever emerges victorious in the polls.
“It must be noted that in the upcoming 2024 elections, Labour would vote with hunger and anger. Anybody who benefits from the hunger and anger votes of Labour must necessarily do something to mitigate the hunger and anger of Labour no matter how small they may be,” Prof Gyampo told Evans Mensah.

His response follows former President John Mahama urging Ghanaians, particularly trade and labour groups, to grant him a grace period if he successfully regains power.

This request comes in response to the increased demand for improved conditions of service from these groups.

Addressing attendees at a ‘Campus Connect’ event in Hohoe, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer stressed the importance of allowing time to revive the economy before tackling specific demands.

But the senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana highlighted some conditions that government would have to meet before the Labour Union can grant government a honeymoon period.

He emphasised that whoever assumes leadership should demonstrate leadership by example. According to him, this factor will play a crucial role in garnering support from the Labour Union.

“Leaving by example here, I am talking about the fact that you wouldn’t ask Labour to tighten their belts whilst you your appointees would be leaving in opulence as we keep seeing now,” he explained.

According to him, the size of government will also be a factor in Labour’s demands, adding that government’s austerity measures must implemented such that they affect everybody from the presidency level to daily rated employee of the land
