Chris Hughton Stresses Importance of Positive Outcome Against Egypt for Black Stars’ AFCON Progression

Black Stars Head Coach, Chris Hughton, underscores the pivotal nature of securing a favorable result in the upcoming clash against Egypt, emphasizing its significance in the progression of Ghana’s campaign in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Côte d’Ivoire.

Following a disheartening 2-1 defeat against Cape Verde in their opening match of the AFCON tournament, Hughton’s Black Stars find themselves at the bottom of Group B, with Cape Verde leading with three points. Egypt and Mozambique hold one point each after their 2-2 draw.

Expressing dissatisfaction with his team’s defensive performance leading to the conceded goals, Hughton conveyed disappointment over the undesired outcome and pledged corrective measures in the upcoming fixture.

“As we approach the Egypt game, it becomes imperative for us to secure positive results. The players must grasp the significance of this and understand the disappointment felt by Ghanaians. Against Egypt, we have no alternative but to achieve favorable outcomes,” remarked Hughton during the post-match press conference.

Hughton affirmed the team’s commitment to rigorous training sessions aimed at addressing defensive lapses, with the goal of emerging stronger in subsequent matches. The critical encounter against seven-time AFCON winners Egypt is slated for Thursday at the Stade Félix-Houphouët-Boigny, followed by the final group match against Mozambique.
