Edward Bawa, Member of Parliament for Bongo and a member of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, attributes Ghana’s current power outages to the financial instability plaguing the energy sector.
Despite Deputy Energy Minister Andrew Egyapa Mercer’s assurances of resolving power supply issues and a $10 million disbursement to WAPCo for gas supply, intermittent blackouts persist. This situation draws parallels with the “Dumsor” crisis of 2015 and aligns with Nana Amoasi VII’s prediction of ongoing power challenges due to economic constraints.
Mr. Bawa’s remarks shed light on the government’s struggle to manage finances within the energy sector, resulting in difficulties maintaining a stable power supply. During an interview on The Big Issue on Citi TV, Mr. Bawa stated, “As to whether what is the situation as we have it now, simple and short, the sector is broke. That’s all. That’s the situation.” He further emphasized the disparity between peak demand and available capacity, indicating a shortfall in power supply.
