Professor Steve Hanke, a notable expert in Applied Economics from John Hopkins University-USA, has once again voiced strong criticism against the economic management of Ghana under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo.
In a recent post observed by GhanaWeb Business on January 8, shared on X (formerly Twitter), Professor Hanke, a consistent critic of President Akufo-Addo, accused him of steering the Ghanaian economy towards a crisis. To emphasize his viewpoint, he accompanied his tweet with a cartoon illustration.
“Pres. Akufo-Addo continues to drive the Ghanaian economy off a cliff,” stated Professor Hanke via X.
Throughout 2022, the US-based professor gained prominence in the Ghanaian media landscape for consistently lamenting what he sees as economic mismanagement imposed by the country’s economic managers on its citizens. He notably characterized Ghana’s cedi as a depreciated currency and referred to the country as a debt junkie.
Currently under its 17th IMF bailout program, Ghana is actively seeking agreement with external creditors to secure the second tranche bailout of $600 million. Approval by the IMF Executive Board is expected to contribute to restoring macroeconomic stability and addressing issues such as debt sustainability.
