OSP and Judicial joint declaration demonstrates a strong commitment to combating corruption – GBA

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has affirmed that the joint statement released by the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the Judicial Service reflects a strong dedication to combatting corruption.

In an interview, the GBA’s Public Relations Officer, Saviour Kudze, expressed approval of the collaboration, portraying it as a positive development that underscores a renewed commitment to the ongoing fight against corruption and related activities.

“I use the term ‘renewed’ because they have consistently collaborated and shown commitment to combating corruption. This approach aligns with our belief in the necessity of collaboration and engagement rather than the conventional methods. However, it is crucial to emphasize that adherence to court rules and procedures remains imperative,” he stated.

The official commitment by the Judicial Service of Ghana and the Office of the Special Prosecutor on Wednesday aims to suppress corruption through joint law enforcement efforts and ensuring equitable hearings for all participants in the criminal justice system.

This commitment emerged in response to concerns raised by Ghana’s Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyabeng, regarding perceived unfair rulings on cases related to corruption. Agyebeng criticized the court’s apparent disregard for the powers of his office, highlighting what he perceived as a premature dismissal of cases. He argued that hindering the successful prosecution of politically exposed cases could have detrimental consequences for the country.

After engaging with various stakeholders, including the Ghana Bar Association, the Judicial Service, and the Office of the Special Prosecutor, emphasized the pivotal roles of the Judiciary and the OSP in the collective effort to combat corruption and corruption-related activities.

Responding to the joint declaration, former MP for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, who previously served on the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, underscored the significance of the statement in the country’s anti-corruption endeavors. He noted the Judiciary’s concerns and their commitment to collaborative efforts through established institutions and procedures to effectively tackle corruption.

In summary, the joint commitment signals a united front against corruption, acknowledging the crucial roles of both the Judiciary and the Office of the Special Prosecutor in addressing this pervasive issue in Ghana.
