GH¢4,000 was our profit from our most recent production, while GH¢60,000 was taxed – George Quaye

Renowned Ghanaian Media Personality and CEO of Image Bureau, George Quaye, disclosed that he contributed GH¢60,000 in taxes following the successful debut of his latest stage production of Chinua Achebe’s “The Gods are not to Blame.” In a conversation on Hitz FM on Thursday, December 13, Quaye revealed that despite his company’s profits amounting to GH¢4,000 from the production, the government emerged as the primary beneficiary of his hard work.

Reflecting on the financial aftermath of “The Gods Are Not to Blame,” Quaye expressed his thoughts on the tax obligations, stating, “After putting up ‘The Gods Are Not to Blame, I was looking at the taxes that we have to pay as compared to the other expenses. The biggest beneficiary was the government. And you know the taxes; they take it straight at the door. After everything, we paid a tax of almost GH¢60,000. Meanwhile, our profit as Image Bureau was GH¢4,000.”

While Quaye conveyed that he is not opposed to paying taxes, he emphasized his preference for seeing tangible improvements in the lives of hardworking Ghanaians. In particular, he highlighted the National Theatre, the venue for many of his plays, as an area that could benefit from tax revenue.

“I have no problem, but I would be happy to pay taxes if I entered the venue where the play was hosted, the National Theatre, and the air conditioning was working, the washrooms were tidy, the seats were comfortable, and I could see that that was what the government did with our taxes. I would be happier,” he added.
