Group to picket Parliament to demand investigation into top GRA officials today
A group of private Ghanaian citizens led by Charles Akowuah Tuffour are set to throng to the Parliament of Ghana today, Tuesday, December 5, 2023 to demand for action on their earlier petition to the Speaker of Parliament.
The group, known as Concerned Citizens of Ghana on Friday, March 4, 2023 petitioned the Speaker of Parliament to constitute a Parliamentary probe into what the group described as ”illegal stay of office” by Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, the Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority and Madam Julian Essiam, a Revenue Generation Officer at the Ghana Revenue Authority.
According to the group, these two top officials have overstayed their office especially after attaining the mandatory retirement age and their contract extensions expired in 2021.
In a brief interaction with the Convenor, Mr Akowuah indicated to Masemtvgh that an earlier petition was sent to the Office of the Special Prosecutor on Thursday, February 16, 2023 to conduct a thorough investigation into the continuous stay of office by these two top officials of GRA. According to Mr Akowuah, though the group received a positive response from the Office after their petition, nothing has since been heard from the Office despite their incessant calls on the OSP for briefing.
Mr Akowuah, who is disappointed in the Office of the Special Prosecutor, remained resolute of getting the needed support from the Speaker of Parliament this time in conducting a thorough investigation to bring this important matter of public interest into finality.
He Akowuah disclosed that a press conference will be held in Accra to inform the public after which the group will proceed to Parliament to deliver a statement to the Speaker and later move to the Headquarters of the Ghana Revenue Authority to present a copy of the statement to the Board Chairman of the Ghana Revenue Authority.
