The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to hold a press conference on the naming of Sunyani Regional Hospital into Sunyani Teaching Hospital.
This media engagement will be led by the National Chairman, Hon Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, a native of the Region and a three term former Member of Parliament for the then Wenchi West and Tain Constituencies.
The Sunyani Regional Hospital, which was built by the then President Jerry John Rawlings, in February, 2023, given approval by cabinet to convert and upgrade the facility into a teaching hospital.
The launching of this project was done on Saturday, 18th November, 2023 by the Minister for Health who is also a Member of Parliament for Dormaa Central, Hon Kwaku Agyeman Manu on behalf of President Akufo-Addo.
Residents in Sunyani have been raising concerns as to why no physical infrastructure and other essential medical equipment have not been seen nor given to the hospital to reflect its new status before renaming the facility. To them, painting to rename the facility does not lead to upgrade of a Regional Hospital into a Teaching Hospital and therefore called on the government to immediately provide the needed infrastructure and machines to reflect the status.
At the ceremony, Dwenem Manhene, Nana Bofo Bene II, representing the President of the Bono House of Chiefs, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, appealed to the government to go beyond the name change and ensure that the hospital gets the needed assistance to grow to become what a Teaching Hospital should be.
