The recent spillage of the Akosombo Dam by the Volta River Authority (VRA) has prompted a swift response from the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin. In a parliamentary address on Tuesday, Bagbin announced that the house would launch a thorough inquiry into the incident, which has led to the displacement of thousands of residents in parts of the Volta and Eastern regions.
Expressing his concern, Bagbin emphasized the gravity of the situation, condemning the VRA for carrying out the spillage without a well-prepared security and safety plan in place. He labeled the lack of foresight in such a potentially destructive activity as unacceptable and stressed the need for accountability.
Addressing his fellow parliamentarians, Bagbin asserted, “This is a national assignment, and parliament should be at the forefront of finding solutions to this recurring problem that our nation faces.” He further stated that parliament would take necessary actions to investigate the matter thoroughly and make recommendations to safeguard the lives and properties of those residing along the Volta River, the lake, and other settlements along riverbanks.
Additionally, Bagbin called upon all Members of Parliament to stand in solidarity with their colleagues whose constituencies had been adversely affected by the spillage. The Speaker’s call for unity highlights the importance of collective action and support in times of crisis.
As the inquiry unfolds, the nation will be watching closely, expecting comprehensive findings and proactive measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible and well-planned actions, particularly concerning vital infrastructures that impact the lives and well-being of the populace.
