Flood victims in the Sene East, Sene West and Pru East districts of the Bono East region have been supplied relief items by the flag bearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama.
National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, during the delivery in one of the communities indicated that the items were not meant for members of the NDC but persons who have fallen victim to the floods.
He told his party supporters not to think the items were for them if they were not affected by the floods.
Fourteen out of 109 communities along the Upper Volta Basin affected by the spillage by the Volta River Authority have been completely destroyed.
Over 3000 people have been rendered homeless as a result of the floods in the Upper Volta Basin.
Delivering the items on behalf of John Mahama, National Chairman Asiedu Nketia told the party members that the items belonged to the victims and not NDC faithful.
“The items we brought are not meant to be distributed to NDC members. If you’re an NDC and your home or your farmland have not been flooded, you’re not part. They are meant for those in trouble,” he was emphatic.
According to him, disasters are not political and couldn’t have identified which homes and farms belonged to persons from one political party or the other.
“The floods were not led by any party colours which were pointing to the homes of NDC, NPP, CPP or the butterfly movement and which ones to take over or not. There is a disaster and we are here to help everyone in distress irrespective of the party he/she belongs.
“When we return on a party mission, I know our party members we’ll have our meeting with but this one is for the victims of the disaster,” he stated.
This is John Mahama’s second batch of items to the flood victims after presenting the first batch of the items to victims in the North, Central and South Tongu constituencies of the Volta region.
They are the three severely hit constituencies in the Lower Volta Basin.
A delegation of leaders and members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and leadership of the Minority in Parliament visited the victims in the Volta region Friday, October 20, 2023.
They converged at Sogakope of
the South Tongu district to attend to persons affected by the floods in the area.
Also led by the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, he was accompanied by the Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.
The donation was in fulfillment of a promise made to the flood victims by the former President when he visited the area at the onset of the floods.
Former President Mahama promised to work with the Minority in Parliament to provide more humanitarian support for the victims.
They went with five trucks loaded with bags of rice, water, and some beverages.
